About the event

The Awakenings Ensemble performs at the Lyric’s Underground on Saturday July 10 in a much anticipated show. The 8 piece World/Funk outfit has just released its double album DUALITY which brings together instrumentalists and vocalists from across the globe creating a truly splendid sonic experience. The album is receiving critical acclaim in the press, both locally and nationally, and with the cream of WA's musical talent featuring prominently across the two discs it's no wonder the group is known for captivating audience members with stellar performances. Be prepared for a high energy, groove based show with Sophie Foster (vocals), Ricki Malet (trumpet), Jeremy Greig (trombone), Peter Jeavons (electric bass), Kristian Borring (guitar), Steve Richter (percussion) and leader Michael Pignéguy (drums). What the press says about DUALITY Around the Sound | March 2021 “The Power of Two” "The Awakenings Ensemble’s latest double album is an absolute banger, choc full of accessible music that is intelligible to the lay person such as myself, but sufficiently complex to satisfy the mind, soul and pretentions of the most ardent of enthusiasts.  Balance in all things is an admirable virtue and one that Michael Pignéguy and his ensemble have nailed with the greatest of aplomb….. The energy of the music hangs in the air long after the vibrations have stopped…" - Andrea Thompson THE AUSTRALIAN | June 2021

**** "This two disc-album sees two suites presented [with] high energy instrumentals on Introspections (Disc 1) and five impressive female singers in the soul/funk idiom on Collaborations (Disc 2). All compositions are by Michael Pignéguy other than two of his arrangements: Wayne Shorter’s Footprints and the standard My Funny Valentine. This is unmistakably a drummer’s album, a chief asset being Pignéguy’s brilliance at the drum kit!" - Eric Myers
