About the event

Music wouldn’t be where it is today without the influence of melanin-abundant artists expressing themselves out of the trials and tribulations they have and are experiencing.

Janelle Ashley is a second generation Australian, born in Kalgoorlie with chocolate features and a love for singing stemming from her parent’s filipino background.

She was mostly the odd one out growing up due to her south-east asian looks in the isolated country town. However after embracing her physical differences to her peers, she has been honing the iconic filo tone and belting at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) for the past 3 years.

This night she pays tribute specifically to the female artists of colour who have empowered her personally and who are shaping the affectionate and sultry genre of R&B.

Expect to hear music from the likes of Puerto Rician goddess Sabrina Claudio, the mixed Filipino prodigy H.E.R and to the African-American neo-soul queen herself Erykah Badu.

Line Up

Lead Vocals: Janelle Ashley Backing Vocals: Persia Najafzadeh, Kirsten D’Cruz and Ayuna Aitken Guitar: Isaac Reynolds Keys: Luke Geha  Bass: Campbell Breakell Drums: Joe Bell
